Website Tips and Lobs @ Pickleball

My rating: 4 out of 5

Lots of lobs today. Most people were hitting about 50% of them out. Even our youngest player, Evan, tried a couple. Younger players don’t often go for lobs, because they’re not as fun as a typical hard volley.

Jim the Pickleball Pro “didn’t realize” I was a web designer with experience in SEO, and sort of randomly started to complain that his website traffic was extremely disappointing. He’s a fine artist with an online gallery.

He paid a rookie web designer $900 for his website and then discovered that it was just sitting there, and not contributing much to his business. People weren’t finding his work on Google unless they searched for his name specifically, and that just wasn’t going to happen.

Long story short, I told him how to get to where he wants to be. It won’t be easy, but at least he has a plan now.

It helps that Jim teaches painting classes and has plenty of materials to use to help him succeed on the web. I’m amazed how, even though his business needs are clearly defined (sell art), the professionals he had consulted with had given him effectively useless advice.

It felt like backyard pickleball from that point—I couldn’t stop thinking about Jim’s silly website while I was playing, and the sun was starting to feel pretty warm after a few long games.
