My Son Goes to Hooters All Day: Pickleball Adventures

My rating: 5 out of 5

Let’s just get this out there: I won five out of six pickleball games today! Woo hoo! Pickleball is not a hard game to learn, but like any other game, it can take a lot of experience to get out of the low-scoring range.

Between games I sat next to S., a retired senior. We talked about family and she told me she has a son who recently retired from the Navy after 20 years. She’s glad he has great medical, but upset that he apparently just hangs out at Hooters every day. And she finds this out from one of her Bunko friends, who is on Facebook, and frequently says, “did you see your son’s Facebook photos? He’s at Hooters all the time!” S. says it’s embarrassing, but she’s doesn’t seem like the type to get very embarrassed. She’s a tough lady, and a very talented athlete. I would say she’s very talented “for her age” but from what I understand, she was talented at every age.

I also learned that C., another club member, was an operating systems programmer for Sun Microsystems back in the ’90s. He worked on virtual memory and device drivers for Solaris. That’s pretty cool. I almost said, “I guess you’re the guy who made peoples’ hard drives grind all the time” but didn’t. Instead I gushed that I used to log into Solaris all the time! but it didn’t seem important to him anymore. He’s a “landowner” now, whatever that means. I wanted to ask him more about computer stuff but it was time to play another game.

Playing six matches is tough. It’s basically 2 hours of running around with maybe a couple 10 or 15 minute breaks. I drank all of my water and am feeling pretty stiff right now. Bet I’ll be sore tomorrow.
