Zoom: How to recover non-converted .zoom files when they refuse to convert? (Disappearing Conversion Window)

This problem with Zoom recordings was really frustrating to figure out!

First, I had .zoom files from a meeting recording, that had failed to convert to video. Then, every method I tried to get them to convert, didn’t work.

The conversion screen would disappear every time, or get stuck at “0%” forever.

After lots of trial and error…here’s the fix!

Please note:

  • First, I consider this an ADVANCED fix and cannot provide support beyond the description here. You have been warned.
  • Second, I’ve only tested this in Linux. But I don’t think it is necessarily Linux-specific.

Zoom: Recover non-converted .zoom files – my discovered WORKING method

This method worked for me when other methods didn’t.

1. Preparation Steps

  • IMPORTANT! KEEP BACKUPS of your .zoom files. Don’t lose your data!
  • Put the “stuck” non-converted .zoom files in a backup folder somewhere, you’ll need them.
    • Or AT LEAST know where they are – usually in your Zoom folder in Documents, in a sub-folder named “2026-03-…” or whatever the date is.
    • As of this writing, Zoom’s “Computer Recordings” area in “Hub” has a folder button you can click, to open this folder in your file manager.
  • In Zoom: Start a new meeting w/ just yourself, no big deal. This is a temporary meeting only.
  • Record the meeting! Start recording it.
  • End the recording after a few seconds, BUT do not end the Zoom meeting yet.

2. The Trick: Next Steps Outside of Zoom

  • Keep Zoom open for now.
  • In your computer’s File Manger, go to your “Documents -> Zoom -> (Current Live Meeting name)” folder
    • This is the folder for the TEMPORARY meeting you just recorded.
  • REMOVE the newly created .zoom files that were just barely created there. They should be named like “double_click_to_convert…”
  • MOVE the “stuck” .zoom files into this new folder, from the backup folder.
  • BE SURE to name them like this:
    • double_click_to_convert_01.zoom (the larger file – this one is the video + audio)
    • double_click_to_convert_02.zoom (the smaller file – this one is just the audio)

3. Final Steps

  • End the Zoom meeting that you just started
  • The conversion window should pop up: “Unsupported files found, try to convert?”
  • Click YES
  • Wait. You should usually see a “1%” within a few seconds, not stuck at 0% anymore.
  • When completed, your converted video & audio files should appear in the same folder – the new meeting’s folder. You can move them to another folder now if desired.

That’s it!

(It’s what worked for me, anyway!)

Bonus: Why does Zoom use these silly “dot Zoom” files instead of just saving to MP4 format?

The answer seems to be: The .zoom format is more like raw data, so it’s less risky than trying to save in the MP4 format, which is a bit more fancy. This makes your recordings safer against any glitches during the recording process.

It’s kind of like writing an idea down on a piece of paper you have with you, rather than waiting until you can publish the idea as a social media post. Sure, thoughts on paper can be a pain to type in later…but if it’s what all that have right now, maybe this means you don’t forget the idea.

In Zoom, this still means the file has to be converted after the meeting, and we can end up needing extra help! So – there are some clear pros and cons here, but I can see why they don’t try to convert straight to MP4.
