If you haven't seen it yet, there is a great comparison of Global Illumination methods at the Wiki. Be sure to check it out - there are a lot of different ways to use GI in Art of Illusion.

Personally, I like to use Photon Mapping for previews and Monte Carlo GI for final renders.
