As the premier post in this new and exciting FS category, (and a putrid, festering thanks to Marc for it), I'd first like to call to attention my timely and coincidental discovery today, of this bit of news:
http://www.blender3d.org/cms/Newsitem.6 … 960.0.html
With Verse and the Orange project, (http://orange.blender.org/), that kind of progressiveness (and spirit of mutuality) is enlightening, and inspiring for the possibilities suggested.
And lately, right on here, there has been some formative interest along those lines:
http://friendlyskies.net/aoiforum/viewt … 84&p=2
So if you, yourself, dear reader, and righteous user and/or developer of AoI and other fine, hopefully open source, software, have similar collaborative ideas, suggestions and/or recommendations, or simply need some practical help on a project of your own, this is the place.

I startet a little premodeling to find out how to do it best. But not very serious (measured in time used).
But since you mentioned collaborations and Blender, I point you to another project thats going on i the german Truespace community:
http://www.3d-ts-forum.de/wbb2/board.ph … 3&sid=
This should end in a whole video - we´re collecting ideas and finetune the story we had choosen. We´ve one leader who has made some proffessional animations, so we´re high motivated.
Oliver - the project-leader has tried to get some help on international basis, but most of the international Truespace Users seemed to have no time.
Nevertheless, it´s o.k. to model outside Truespace!
So it would be possible for AOI users to collaborate.
The only drawback is that half of our crew doesn´t seem to speak english,
or just don´t trust their abilities. But I´m willing to translate all german to english (maybe better than babelfish).
I´ll be back when we have set up an english/international thread.

Hmm, a Cugnot is it then? Lovely
I thick collaboration is a great idea,
and I'm certainly up for helping.
is it going to be animated?
It would be good.

Nice Tutorial Matt!

Edit: I agree. Nice tutorial Matt.
Edit Edit: Didn't read previous posts carefully enough. If we're going to model in any other program than AoI, then count me out. Blender is totally not my thing
. Otherwise, I'd like to be involved in an animation project, it'd be a nice xperience.

Great! And welcome aboard. Anything about it that catches your fancy so far?
Rasmus, I use AoI exclusively for all my 3D, but regardless, if we're going to do a collaboration on an AoI forum, it would, at least, seem, to make sense to use AoI where at all possible, especially if we agree that, at the same time as showcasing our talents (and capacities to collaborate online-- a talent in itself
), that it showcases AoI.

I had a thought about how the results of the Cugnot Collaboration could conceivably, and potentially lucratively, pique some "external interests"-- from history, automotive and cultural museums, for examples-- for this and future projects... Just a fantasy, perhaps... maybe I tripped over Harald's rainbow.

Well thats what I call "enterprise-thinking" :-)
But no - I don´t think that this is a hunt for rainbows. Just well thought.
My spare time is just so minimized that I´ve found myself more writing than modeling.
But I´m willing to join the team!
If somebody would provide the scale for example (null objects in the wheel centers and such)
everbody could dl this >prescene< and work parts out.
Similar to a premade autocad szene.

Cool
well. In an effort to get the ball rolling (to start),
to keep things simple hows;
1 unit = 1 meter
Ok? stupid?
Also, I've found and edited a schematic of a side view. It was the highest resolution I could find.
Here
If it's ok, put dibs on the part you would like to modal.
Who's going to put it all together?
Then who's would like to animate it, if it is going to be animated?
What's the background going to be?
so many questions...
There are loads of useful things (pictures) on this site but I can't read it.

Matt,
head over to to the other discussion where SWT started this thing.
I´ve found the same picture you´ve found via Google´s picture search without the squarepaper(?).
It´s nearly a blueprint.
I guess we can think about an animation, - but first we´ve to setup the model somehow.
Do we need scales? Or just a rough model?
How do our american friends think about meter scale? ;-)
If we had a premade scene, like suggested - everyone can model what he/she likes
and than >somebody< (SWT for example as he started that thing) can put the parts together.
We´ll have a chance though that we end up with 30 tire parts lol

PS: For a wooden floor there is a free tool from spiralgraphics that I´ve used successfully for determine
what floor to lay in the living room...
Maybe a wooden floor would make it to show the car in a virtual museum.
http://www.spiralgraphics.biz/download_ww.htm
I guess what Spiralgraphics can do could be done in AOI alone - but it´s nice to have those presets with aging presets and such...

I think a basic scale will be good, to ease work laying out.
What would the pre-made scene contain?
although I think the 'virtual museum' would look very good when finished

Pardon my delay in responding, as I was out of town...
Incidentally, in considering our personal time-constraints, I nominate to have the project "fluid" and deadline-free, if as professional in quality as we can.
The schematic is good, and it has a scale which is fine for me. A tentative idea I just had while typing this, was to trace the whole side-view with curves in AoI, or vectors (for export to AoI) in a 2d vector/SVG program, as guides (maybe adding Null objects too?). Thoughts? I can and would be willing to do that, and I imagine that it could then be scaled fairly easily and accurately.
As for other schematics or images that we come across that we want to subsequently use, I suppose that we could simply adapt them.
The virtual museum concept would be nice for still images as well as an animation, but perhaps the accident and its setting could also be recreated, possibly even for an actual museum to want to purchase, given sufficient authenticity.
What do you guys think about roles? Would you like to have the project run that way, or would you rather have it run more informally? And what (tasks) do you feel comfortable with, good at and/or feel like doing, if any in specific?

Matt, I clicked on it, but it didn't come up. It was good and I'd like to get started with it with tracing curves over it, if that's ok with you guys. Could you repost it?

Hmm I don't know why it's not working...
but nevertheless I've put it on a different host (more reliable)
