Re: rigid body simulation

Hmm... this has somehow become a forked conversation (sorry for that). It's just that I hate the forum UI (would be an exaggeration to call it GUI) at sourceforge, however the forum @ sourceforge is unfortunately more visited than friendly skies forum. I would prefer to keep the discussion on Marc's forum, but it seems the bulk of the discussion has already been carried out at sourceforge's. brickicon_cry

Re: rigid body simulation

If you need Peter to be involved, or think you might benefit from his advice, you'd be better off discussing development at SF. (I feel the same way about their forum setup, but oh well...)

Re: rigid body simulation

Ehh... sorry....

This therad is some three years old now. And I saw nothing moving on the link...... sad So what is your point? ....

[edit]
OK -- I did not make the best possible enterance to this forum at my time... but why don't you just start a new thread (or comment on a WAY newer one).....

I know, I should say "Welcome to The Forum" ... big_smile

Re: rigid body simulation

And I saw nothing moving on the link

When I scrolled down I came across a number of AVI and MPG links.
Sadly, I don't have the right plugins for those particular formats, but it seemed my browser was trying at least :-)

While I also find it confusing when a really old thread is suddenly brought back to life, I understand how easy it is to do without realising it. :-)

Multiple times - even recently, I've gone to add a post to t thread somewhere, only to cheack first and see the post dates were 2005 or something.

The problem is that when someone first comes to a forum, there is a lot of really interesting "catching up" to do, and it all seems to be in the present from the point of view of the reader.

The only reliable way I can think of to stop zombie threads is to implement a timeout in the forum software itself.
Admins could unlock them if there were a good reason, but as you say, it almost always better to start a new thread anyway.

I'll ask Marc if there is any plugin available that can lock a thread after a predetermined amount of inactivity.

Cheers!
Nik

Re: rigid body simulation

Hi simulation11,

You are certainly welcome to the forum! :-)

I found the link you posted to be pretty interesting, although I was hoping to find source code as well, and could find no link to anything like that.

And as an aside, it's worth checking the date of the last post in a thread before adding a comment. Threads where the last post is older than 1 year (or even 6 months) are realistically dead, and adding a single post tends to only partially raise them from the dead - resulting in a "zombie" thread.

... And as you may have noticed, zombie threads can be irritating to others in the forums.

If, as I infer from your handle and this early post, you are interested in physical simulation, then you should check out the PhysicsPlugin for AOI. Currently it handle fluids and soft bodies, but not rigid bodies.

If you have experience with this kind of code, you might be able to talk the author of the PhysicsPlugin into letting you contribute to it - although so far he has preferred to handle it all himself :-)

If you're interested in the plugin, have a look here:
http://delt0r.blogspot.com/

Cheers!
Nik

... And now we really should let this poor thread sleep its eternal sleep... :-)

Oh -- Sorry, I had another look.... I did not realize, how long the page was and I wasn't paying attention to the links. icon_redface

Yes, guess this is interesting.... smile I remember that simulations usually come down to rather simple equations but generate a vast number of individual calculations. Thanks to matrix commands (or what ever the right word for it is) those can be "mechanized" with a reasonabe amount of work.

AoI provides 4x4 - matrix commands that are adapted to handle coordinate transformations. For simulation some more general level nxn handlers need to be added... I suppose there is free code floating around somewhere.... wink

BTW I find it a kind of interesting that "delt0r" started with fluids that I'd expect to be a lot harder to handle that rigid bodies. scratchchin
