We're gonna try something a little different this time around.  So, with no further ado, here's what is involved:

Dates:    August 1st - 27th
Judging:    August 28th - 31st    (by poll)
Subject:    Aliens
Time limit:  Less than 3 hours
Judging based on:  Best looking alien

It is recommended that a concept be posted here by the 15th (sketch, simple 3d, or even word description), although this isn't a requirement.

FAQ:

Question:  I made my project in under the time limit, but the rendering/compositing is going to take me way over.  What do I do?
Answer:  The time limit is only for the project creation - rendering/compositing  time may exceed that, if you like.

Question:  I want a backdrop or I want to texure it.  Does that take from my time limit?
Answer:  A backdrop will not take from your time, but texturing does indeed take from the time limit.

Question:  What am I being judged on?
Answer:  Judgement will be based on what is the coolest looking alien.  Be creative!  Any type of alien is acceptable.

Question:  My model is awful - can I start over?
Answer:  Sure.  Just restart your time with a clean slate.

Question:  I went 2 minutes over.  Will something bad happen to me?
Answer:  The time limit is just a guideline.  This is not a speed contest, but the time limit makes those with busy schedules be able to be competitive.  Anything beyond that is between you and your conscience.

Question:  What format should I use for render?
Answer:  Use whatever format you're comfortable with and is readily available.  Use any commonly used compressed format.  If you need further help or suggestions on preparing your scene for viewing, please ask away.

Question:  How do I do this?  In under the time limit?
Answer:  Don't bite off more than you can chew.  Keep things simple - quality will generally buy you more votes around these parts than a complex image done poorly.

I've started mine on an alien invasion rather than actualy trying to model an alien. The 3h gives a lot of time to play with.

That's pretty cool, Matt!  Even though you kept it simple, the lighting really gives it an ominous feeling.  The lasers are great and the building sculpting gave me a chuckle.

Thanks to the comments. The lighting is only a emmisive enviromental texture -  I'm really bad at using 'lights' so AO is allways in preference.
there are only 4 types of building there, copyed and pasted. It was an all-or-nothing texture work with the building. I tried to texture them with images of the web but I could not get them to look ok, so I used none.

I spent 2:30 h on modeling and textures - plus rendering time. Though I consider the work finished, I can't decide which one should be promoted to "final". The only difference is the change in one transparency setting for the top texture (layered).

I like the idea of a cloaked alien traveling unnoticed to earth during a shuttle mission. But the "green", glowing texture is based on a radar image of the sun and therefore even more "alien"... big_smile

Any suggestions?

Me too. I think that the fisrt of the smaler linked images is best (or mabe just a little more transparent)
